E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge is a red wine blend comprised of blend of 50% Syrah, 45% Grenache and 5% Mourvedre.
The Guigal domain was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis. His son, Marcel, took over from his father in 1961. Under Marcel’s guidance, Guigal wines gained recognition for their exceptional quality and consistency. The winery’s philosophy emphasized meticulous vineyard management, low yields, and a hands-on approach to winemaking, including extended aging in oak barrels. Today, the Guigal winery remains a family affair, with Marcel’s son, Philippe Guigal, serving as the third generation to lead the estate.
The Guigal family own vineyards in Condrieu and in the Côte-Rôtie with illustrious plots in many famous appellations. The wines are made and aged at 12th century Chateau d’Ampuis located in the northern Rhone. In the summer of 2003, in an effort to improve quality and control over all aspects of wine making, Guigal opened an onsite cooperage. The cooperage at the Château d’Ampuis works in partnership with the cooperage at Chagny managed by Seguin Moreau.
E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge is made with grapes sourced from vineyard with an average vine age of 35 years old located on varied soils including sediment, limestone, granite, pebbles and alluvia. The wine is vinified in a traditional manner with an extended period of maceration on the skins. The wine is aged for 18 months in large oak foudres prior to bottling.
E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône Rouge is known for its approachability and versatility. It offers a harmonious balance of fruit, spice, and earthiness and is an excellent representation of the Rhône Valley’s winemaking tradition, offering a delightful expression of the region’s terroir and grape varieties. It is a wine that can be enjoyed in its youth, but it also possesses the potential to age gracefully, evolving and developing further complexity over time (5 to 8 years).
