Description

Fleurie La Chapelle des Bois is made by a wine co-operative called La Cave des Grands Vins de Fleurie. The co-op was founded in 1927, largely by the women of Fleurie, who has become used to working together, during and after WW1, when many of the men from the region were fighting and many would not return.

Today the co-op is one of the largest producers Fleurie AC (as well as Brouilly, Chirouble, Morgon, Moulin A Vent, Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages) and has 330 member-winegrowers with over 350 hectares of vineyards. Fleurie is probably the most famous of the 10 Beaujolais Crus and is often referred to as the “Queen of Beaujolais” due to its feminine, soft and elegant style (the fuller-bodied Moulin à Vent would be the King). Fleurie, like all red Beaujolais is made from 100% Gamay grapes.

Fleurie La Chapelle des Bois is a “Cuvée Terroirs” (one of 13 such named vineyard sites in Fleurie) and it is representative of its vineyard location and aspect more than a simple village wine. La Chapelle des Bois area has different characteristics from the rest of the area and is on higher ground than most of Fleurie. It tends to be a little bit fuller in style than other Fleurie. It is made using the Beaujolais vinification technique of carbonic maceration and is aged for around 8 months in stainless steel vats. Fluerie will age gracefully for 4 to 5 years in good years.

Tasting Notes

Fleurie La Chapelle des Bois is a clear, light red / garnet colour with red fruit and floral notes on the nose including raspberry, strawberry, blackcurrant and cherry. The palate is soft and smooth, there are more red fruits (strawberry, red cherry) and the finish is crisp, clean, slighty mineral and has good acidity.

Food Pairing

Try Fleurie with red meat, jugged hare, partridge with braised cabbage. It is also good with cold meats and cheeses. Can be served slightly chilled in the summer months.
