M. Chapoutier Le Clos Saint-Joseph Rouge 2020 is part of Chapoutier’s Fac et Spera Sélection Parcellaire range of wines, a range of specially selected parcels of single vineyard wines which Chapoutier describe as a “precise ‘photographic’ image of a terroir”, a snapshot of a grape, in a certain year, in a given terroir. Fac & Spera means “Do & Hope”.
Maison Chapoutier has grown into one of the largest and most recognisable producers of Rhone wines. The company dates back to 1808 when Michel Chapoutier’s distant ancestor Polydor Chapoutier bought a parcel of vines in the Rhone Valley. Today the Chapoutier has vineyards throughout the Rhone from Côte Rôtie in the north to Luberon in the south as well as having overseas projects like Domaine Tournon in Victoria, Australia. Michel is committed to making the best wines whilst respecting the environment. Chapoutier now owns the largest biodynamic vineyard in Europe. It is his conviction that “the complexity in a wine comes from the level of microbiological activity around the vine roots”. Soils on the Chapoutier estate never see pesticides or herbicides, floral growth amongst the vines is essential, and the natural cycles of the earth, sun and moon are also considered.
M. Chapoutier Le Clos Saint-Joseph Rouge is 100% Syrah. One of the top wines from Saint-Joseph, Le Clos is made from a 0.98ha Syrah vineyard planted on coarse black mica granite.
After harvest, the bunches are cut and then transported to the winery in small crates. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in a small, 30 HL, concrete vat with a long maceration for around 5 weeks. The wine is matured entirely in oak barrels (25% new) for around 20 months.
M. Chapoutier Le Clos Saint-Joseph Rouge 2020 has distinctive notes of blueberry and graphite on the nose with full-bodied palate with elegant tannins and notes of sweet spice on the finish. A wonderful expression of this plot.
Colour: dark, garnet black with purple highlights throughout.
Nose: lovely notes of dark fruit (cherry, blackberry), beautiful minerality with graphite notes.
Palate: soft, rich and elegant on entry. Very fine, silky tannins. Long-lingering finish and aromatic notes reminiscent of the granite terroir.
Try with fish in tapenade sauce, small game, lamb Cooked pork meats and soft cheeses, goat’s cheese.
