Louis Jadot Moulin A Vent La Roche is a single vineyard Beaujolais red wine, made from 100% Gamay grapes. The La Roche vineyard is situated under the windmill (Moulin-A-Vent) on the mother rock old of 320 million years. Only the Gamay grape is able to thrive on these soils almost without any water reserve throughout the year.
Louis Jadot is one of the largest and most famous wine producers and negociants in the Burgundy wine-growing region. The origins of the company date back to 1859 when the business was founded by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. Over time the company has acquired plots of vines is some of the most prestigious vineyards in the region including Beaune Clos des Ursules, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Savigny Les Beaune and many more. As well as Burgundy, they also own vineyards in Beaujolais at Chateau des Jacques and at Domaine Ferret in Pouilly Fuisse.
Maison Louis Jadot bought Château des Jacques in 1996. It is situated in Moulin à Vent, between Fleurie and Chenas, and has a 27 ha vineyards of ‘Moulin à Vent’. The 5 ‘Clos’ cover an average of 19.5 hectares. Moulin à Vent is often referred to as the “King of Beaujolais”, and is considered to be the most Burgundian Cru of Beaujolais. The geological origin and soil composition are quite different from the Côte d’Or, which is why Beaujolais red wines are made only from Gamay grapes. The soil is quite light, made up of sand and a little bit of clay, lying on a bedrock high in manganese, that gives the wine its deep colour.
This wine comes from a 1.3 ha site on the estate. Winemaker and estate manager, Guillaume de Castelnau, says “if there were a Grand Cru at Moulin à Vent, it would be this.” 100% Gamay vinified in closed vats with pumping over, and then aged in oak barrels for 12 months. One part of the grapes are de-stemmed.
Louis Jadot Moulin A Vent La Roche is a wine of great tension, with lots of minerality and precision. It is very linear in style, a characteristic that makes it a particularly apt match for complex and refined dishes.
