Yangarra Estate Kings Wood Shiraz is part of Yangarra’s “SB” or Single Block Collection. These Single Block wines are sourced from special sites on Yangarra’s single vineyard that are recognised for their quality and unique varietal expression. Only produced in very limited quantities.
Yangarra Estate is owned by Jackson Family Wines (JFW). The Chairman and proprietor of Jackson Family Wines is Barbara Banke who was marrried to Jess Jackson of Kendall Jackson Fame. JFW had a vision to create a global wine company known for its extraordinary premium and luxury wines from many of the greatest wine-growing regions of the world. Indeed, under Barbara’s stewardship they have since become one of the world’s largest, and high quality, wine companies with interests in California (La Crema, Hartford Court, Camelot Highlands and many more), Chile, Italy, France and South Africa, with their new Capensis project.
Yangarra Estate was established in 2001 when Jackson Family Wines acquired Eringa Park Vineyard. It is a single vineyards estate located in McLaren Vale and specializes in Southern Rhône varieties with emphasis on the estate’s bush-vine Grenache. The property is 170 total hectares, of which nearly 90 hectares are planted to vine. Other grapes varieties grown here include well known grape varieties such as Shiraz, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc with some much more obscure varieties (at least in Australia) such as Bourboulenc, Picpoul Noir, Clairette Blanc and Counois. Yangarra’s combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and refreshing evening breezes make it perfect for growing varieties that thrive in the moderate maritime Mediterranean environments. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic.
Yangarra Estate Kings Wood Shiraz is a from a very special block of vines located in Yangarra’s Blewitt Springs Vineyard in McLaren Vale. This south-east facing 2.3 hectare block (vineyard block 12) was planted in 1999 and is situated on soils composed of weathered sands mixed with ironstone gravels. The 100% Shiraz grapes are hand picked, 20% whole bunches, 30% whole berries mechanically sorted, 50% crushed in open fermenters and on skins for 20 days. The grapes undergo a gentle maceration principle of wetting the cap and only draining and returning when reductive. Only wild yeasts are used in the fermentation and no pressings are used in this wine. The wine is matured in 25 hL French Oak foudres, 50% new and 50% one and two-year-old, for 16 months. Bottled in November 2022.
Certified Organic/ Biodynamic. Also suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
This wine is known as “Kings Wood” after the “Royal Oaks of the King’s wood forests which were planted by monarchs to build elegant cathedrals and church naves. The beautiful old French oak in our giant foudre vessels helps us make elegant wine by gradually polishing and protecting the brightest spiciest Shiraz we grow at Yangarra.”
Powerful, elegant and aromatic. Brambly red and blueberry fruit, winter spices, liquorice, black cherry. Balanced textural palate.
Try with roasted lamb neck, black garlic labneh, beetroot and okra or Barbeque Pork / Chargrilled vegetables.
