Yangarra Estate Hickinbotham Clarendon Grenache is one of the estate’s top single-site Grenaches. It comes from the single vineyard estate located in Blewitt Springs, at the very northern edge of the McLaren Vale wine-growing region in South Australia.
Yangarra Estate is owned by Jackson Family Wines (JFW). The Chairman and proprietor of Jackson Family Wines is Barbara Banke, who was married to Jess Jackson of Kendall Jackson Fame. JFW had a vision to create a global wine company known for its extraordinary premium and luxury wines from many of the greatest wine-growing regions of the world.
Indeed, under Barbara’s stewardship, they have since become one of the world’s largest and high-quality wine companies with interests in California (La Crema, Hartford Court, Camelot Highlands and many more), Chile, Italy, France and South Africa, with their new Capensis project.
Yangarra Estate was established in 2001 when Jackson Family Wines acquired Eringa Park Vineyard. It is a single vineyard estate located in McLaren Vale and specialises in Southern Rhône varieties with emphasis on the estate’s bush-vine Grenache.
The property is 170 total hectares, of which nearly 90 hectares are planted to vine. Other grape varieties grown here include well-known grape varieties such as Shiraz, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, with some much more obscure varieties (at least in Australia) such as Bourboulenc, Picpoul Noir, Clairette Blanc and Counois.
Yangarra’s combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and refreshing evening breezes make it perfect for growing varieties that thrive in the moderate maritime Mediterranean environments. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic.
The old, unirrigated, bush vine Grenache for the Yangarra Estate Hickinbotham Clarendon Grenache was planted in 1962. It comes from the 0.9 hectare block 301. The vines are planted on brown clay loam with weathered and broken siltstone (saprolite) at an altitude of 225 – 230m above sea level, the highest ridge on the estate.
