Domaine de Boischampt Beaujolais-Jullié Blanc is an organic white Beaujolais wine produced from 100% Chardonnay.
Domaine de Boischampt is a Beaujolais property to watch, but one which also has a very long history: the estate was founded in 1642. Under new ownership since 2018, the new owners began transforming the domaine and the days of producing bulk red wine were soon stopped. The estate is owned by Burgundian Antoine Romero, his partners, Yuko Matsuoka Harris and Bob Harris, an Australian-Japanese couple. Romero manages the estate and the winemaker is Thibaud Baudin. Baudin, who has worked at both Domaine de la Vougeraie and Domaine d’Henri (Chablis), set about replanting the vineyards. The estate also began its organic conversion in 2019 and was certified organic in 2023.
In 2018, the estate only produced wines from two appellations: Julienas and Beaujolais Villages rouge. New plots were soon acquired and today the estate produces several wines from different Beaujolais appellations including Julienas, Fleurie, Saint Amour, Chenas and Morgon.
The estate is located in the hillside village of Jullié and comprises 14 hectares of vineyards. The vines are planted on blue stone soils, which are characteristic of Juliénas and very similar to the soils in the famous Côte du Py in Morgon. Rather unusually for a wine region dominated by red wine production, the new ownership decided to also plant 3 hectares of Chardonnay.
Domaine de Boischampt sources Chardonnay grapes from the northeast-facing Emeringes plateau (Le Replat Devavre), where clay-rich soils mixed with ancient colluvium foster slow, even ripening—perfect for this grape variety. Situated between Mont Remont and the foothills of the Haut-Beaujolais, the village of Emeringes produces exclusively Beaujolais-Villages wines.
Beaujolais Blanc (white Beaujolais) is made only from Chardonnay grapes (until recently, Aligoté was allowed). It accounts for approximately 2 to 3% of the region’s wine production. The wines tend to be lighter and fresher in style, but some are also made in a more Burgundian style.
As well as this fantastic white Beaujolais, Fareham Wine Cellar also sells Louis Jadot’s Clos de Loyse.
Domaine de Boischampt Beaujolais-Jullié Blanc displays a bright straw-yellow hue, it opens with delicate aromas of yellow peach, white flowers, and honey, accented by refreshing citrus notes. On the palate, it reveals a fresh, lively character with a touch of minerality, complemented by a smooth, rounded texture.
A great match for fish and white meats. They also work well with goat’s cheese.
