Chateau de Tracy Pouilly Fume is one of the region’s most highly regarded white wines. A classic Pouilly Fume.
The wines of Château de Tracy are crafted at a historic estate where the same family has produced wine since 1396, following the acquisition of the “Les Champs de Crix” vineyard. In 1586, Françoise Stutt wed Françoise de Bar, who brought the seigneury of Tracy as her dowry.
The Stutt family, originally from Scotland, arrived in France during the 15th century to support the future King Charles VII during the Hundred Years’ War. In 1953, Count Alain d’Estutt d’Assay and his wife, the Countess, purchased and revitalised the estate. Today, their youngest daughter, Juliette d’Assay, manages the estate, continuing its storied legacy.
Situated approximately 200 km south of Paris, the Château de Tracy estate occupies a prominent limestone outcrop in the northern part of the Pouilly-Fumé appellation, on the eastern bank of the Loire River, facing Sancerre.
The estate spans around 33 hectares of vineyards, with diverse soils comprising chalk, flint, and Kimmeridgean clay. This unique terroir lends the wines a distinctive minerality and remarkable complexity in both aroma and flavour.
The vineyards are farmed in a gentle, environmentally sensitive and sustainable way. Ploughing of the grass between vines and the uses of insect lures are just methods they use to reduce the number of chemical treatments required. No pesticides are used in the vineyard, there is careful canopy management with green harvesting and yields are kept very low averaging some 53hl per hectare over 6 years.
The grapes for Chateau de Tracy Pouilly Fume are harvested by hand from vineyards in Tracy-sur-Loire overlooking the Loire River. The soils here are flint and Kimmeridgian limestone. There is careful selection, plot by plot, and they are only harvested when they reach maximum ripeness.
The grapes are gently pressed. The plots are vinified separately and the wine is fermented at low temperature in stainless steel with occasional lees stirring. The wine is usually aged for 8 months on the lees, which adds a creamy complexity to the wine, until the following spring when the vats are blended and then bottled.
Suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.
Chateau de Tracy Pouilly Fume has a complex nose of blackcurrants, boxwood and subtle hints of tarragon, followed by lemon and exotic fruits all underpinned by minerality. The palate is tangy and fresh with a lovely richness echoing the fruit flavours found on the nose. Very elegant with a long, complex finish.
Try with shellfish, mussels or crab dishes, a great match for goats cheeses, a classic match for trout and works very well with poultry dishes too.
