Lyme Bay Shoreline is an English PDO quality white wine and one of the most distinctive and critically acclaimed blended whites produced in England today. It is produced by the award-winning Lyme Bay Winery from cool-climate grape varieties sourced from Essex’s celebrated wine-growing hotspot, the Crouch Valley. Each grape variety is fermented separately and blended to capture the essence of the English coastline.
Shoreline white is crisp, aromatic and layered with tropical fruit, citrus, and a saline mineral finish; this is English white wine at its most expressive and most original. Shoreline is a multi-variety English white blend og grape varieties that prosper in the English climate. Each grape variety contributes something distinct to the final wine:
The Crouch Valley in Essex is one of England’s most established and respected wine-growing regions, producing grapes of consistent quality since the 1960s. Many English still winemakers source grapes from here. It is situated on the Crouch Estuary and the area benefits from a distinctive maritime microclimate – lower rainfall than most of England, warm summers tempered by coastal breezes, and well-drained soils that encourage the development of ripe, aromatic fruit. For cool-climate varieties like Bacchus, Reichensteiner and Seyval Blanc. The Crouch Valley’s combination of sunshine hours and maritime influence produces fruit of exceptional aromatic intensity – exactly the character that makes Shoreline one of England’s most immediately recognisable white wines.
Founded in 1993 by Nigel Howard in Devon’s beautiful Axe Valley, Lyme Bay Winery has grown from a producer of cider, fruit wine, and mead into one of England’s most awarded wine producers. The winery is the UK’s largest mead and fruit wine producer and has become renowned for its range of English still and sparkling wines – including the award-winning Lyme Bay Pinot Noir, which won Gold Medals at both the IWC and IWSC 2025 and the Trophy for Best English Pinot Noir and Best English Red.
Today, Lyme Bay operates as a négociant, working with outstanding growers across England – Kent, Essex, Herefordshire, Devon, and Oxfordshire – rather than farming its own vineyards. Managing Director James Lambert’s deliberate choice to work with Burgundy clones of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay has been central to the winery’s critical success. Clem Yates MW joined as winemaker at the beginning of 2025.
Lyme Bay is the only English winery to achieve an A* accreditation from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) for manufacturing quality.
Lyme Bay Shoreline 2024 Tasting Notes
Clear pale lemon in the glass.
The nose is immediately complex and inviting – tropical fruit leads with vibrant pineapple and lime, lifted by a cherry blossom floral note and a subtle saline edge that brings a genuine sense of the English seaside.
On the palate, it is crisp, balanced, and layered: lemon and lime zest drive the acidity, with pineapple, mango and a whisper of grapefruit adding tropical depth.
The finish is long, zesty, and refreshing – clean, mineral and beautifully composed.
Perfect with seafood. Think oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, crab, or lighter dishes like salads and goat cheese. Its bright acidity and salinity cut through richer dishes beautifully.
What grape varieties are in Lyme Bay Shoreline?
Lyme Bay Shoreline is an eight-variety English white blend: Reichensteiner, Bacchus, Chardonnay, Seyval Blanc, Ortega, Pinot Noir (used as a white wine component), Solaris and Sauvignon Blanc. Each variety is fermented separately before blending to capture the individual character of each grape.

It also pairs well with light salads, goat’s cheese, and Asian-inspired dishes.

What is similar to Lyme Bay Shoreline?
If you enjoy Lyme Bay Shoreline, you may also enjoy other English white wines such as our English white wine range, or aromatic whites from New Zealand’s Marlborough region. The wine’s tropical character and refreshing acidity also appeal to lovers of Sauvignon Blanc and Albariño.
Solaris is a white grape variety created in Germany in 1975. It is a cross made from Merzling and Gm 6493 (itself a hybrid of Zarya Severa and Muscat Ottonel).
The variety was developed primarily for cooler climates, as it ripens early and is resistant to fungal diseases, making it ideal for vineyards in northern Europe, which have short growing seasons.
