Pussers Rum Blue Label is a 3-year-old Guyanese rum. It is the same rum as the Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum, but bottled at a slightly more approachable 40% ABV. Both are available to buy now at Fareham Wine Cellar.
Pusser’s Blue Label Rum is inspired by the Admiralty’s blending recipe, which was last used when the Royal Navy discontinued its daily ration. The rum is crafted at Diamond Distillers Ltd in Guyana’s Demerara Valley.
The Blue Label Rum is a blend of column and pot still rums, drawing its distinctive character from rum made from the legendary Port Mourant double wooden pot still. This centuries-old still, built with “Greenheart” staves, infuses the spirit with rich, organic compounds absorbed over decades, creating a flavour profile unlike most other Guyanese rums.
After distillation, the rum matures for at least three years in charred oak barrels, gaining a velvety smoothness and deep, layered notes of caramel and spice.
True to tradition, Pusser’s Blue Label Rum remains 100% natural, free from artificial flavours or colourings, delivering an authentic, full-bodied taste that shines in every sip. Bottled at 40% ABV.
Pusser’s Rum is named after the Royal Navy Slang for a purser, a ship’s supply officer. For more than 300 years, Royal Navy sailors were issued a daily rum ration or “tot”, a highly welcome daily comfort when one was away from home for many months.
The Rum Ration was abolished on the 31st July 1970 (“The Black Day”) and the Pusser’s Rum name quietly lay dormant until 1979 when entrepreneur Charles Tobias sought to resurrect the Pusser’s Rum tradition.
Tobias managed to obtain the rights and the blending information from the Admiralty, set up Pusser’s Rum Ltd on Tortola and, in 1980, began selling Pusser’s Rum, giving civilians the chance to taste an authentic naval rum for the first time. In return, the Royal Navy Sailors’ Fund, a naval charity more commonly called the “Tot Fund”, receives a donation from the sale of each bottle of British Navy Pusser’s Rum.
Pusser’s Blue Label Rum is also available in 5cl miniature bottles, a perfect way to sample this Navy Rum before buying a whole bottle. They are also great for wedding favours, stocking fillers, table presents and much more.
Pussers Blue Label Rum can be served neat or over ice or simply mixed with cola or ginger beer and garnished with a wedge of orange or lime. It is also great in cocktails and adds depth and punch to a classic Daiquiri, Old Fashioned, or even a bold Rum Manhattan. Try it with dark chocolate or grilled pineapple.
Most famously, it is used in a Pusser’s Painkiller, a trademarked cocktail recipe which is a tropically indulgent mix of Pusser’s, pineapple juice, orange juice, cream of coconut, and grated nutmeg.
What Is A Pusser?
A “pusser” is Royal Navy slang for a purser, the officer on board a ship who is responsible for handling money, supplies, provisions and administration.
What is Prusser’s Rum?
There is sometimes confusion around the name and spelling of Pusser. At various times, I have seen this rum incorrectly called Pursers Rum or Prussers Rum.
How Does Pusser’s Blue Label Rum Compare to Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum?
Blue Label is smoother, more approachable, a great everyday sipper and is good for cocktails.
The Gunpowder Proof is a bolder, more intense spirit, which is fuller, heavier, more viscous, weightier on the palate, delivering a little more “kick” and warmth.
