Description

Lepanto PX Solera Gran Reserva is a Brandy de Jerez produced by Sherry producer Gonzales Byass. Lepanto is unusual in that it is the only Brandy de Jerez produced exclusively from the Palomino Fino grape variety, the main grape variety used for Fino and Manzanilla Sherries. It is aged for longer than the Solera Gran Reserva and finished in Pedro Ximenez (PX), rather than Oloroso cask.

Lepanto Brandy by Gonzales Byass

The origins of Gonzales Byass can be traced back to 1835 when Manuel María González Angel was subsequently joined by his English agent Robert Blake Byass. The Byass family withdrew from the company in 1998, and the company is owned and run by the 4th and 5th generations of the González family. Gonzales Byass have been at the forefront of Sherry production, and their Tio Pepe brand became world-famous when it introduced its sombrero and guitar label in 1935.

Lepanto Spanish Brandy stands as the crown jewel of Brandy de Jerez—a testament to centuries of uncompromising craftsmanship. Each bottle draws inspiration from the legendary designs of the Royal Glass Factory of La Granja, embodying an artisanal heritage that flows seamlessly from one generation to the next.

Lepanto Spanish Brandy Production

As mentioned above, Lepanto Brandy is the only Brandy de Jerez made from 100% Palomino grapes grown in the Jerez region. After vinification ,the wine is then double distilled in two Armagnac ‘Charentais’ or “pot” stills, which produce a fuller, richer spirit than column stills. Only the central part or heart of the alcohol spirit produced, discarding the heads and tails known as Holanda, is used. This is the purest and best quality spirit.

Lepanto PX Solera Gran Reserva Maturation Process

  • Initial Ageing: Lepanto PX Solera Gran Reserva is aged for the first 12 years in 600-litre American oak casks previously used for ageing Tio Pepe.
  • Secondary Ageing: After the initial 12 years, the brandy is aged for an additional 3 years in the traditional “Criaderas and Solera” system, using barrels previously used for ageing 30-year-old Gonzales Byass Pedro Ximénez Noé.
  • Ageing System: The “Criaderas and Solera” system involves fractional ageing to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Average Age: The final brandy has an average age of 15 years.
  • Classification: Bottled as a Solera Gran Reserva.
  • Master Distiller: Luis Trillo Gutierrez, with over 25 years of experience, oversees each stage of the maturation and blending process.
  • Alcohol Content: Bottled at 36% ABV.

Tasting Notes

The influence of the time spent in old Pedro Ximenez casks is evident in the Lepanto PX Solera Gran Reserva brandy. It shows a dark amber colour with mahogany tones. On the nose beautiful rich aromas of raisins and figs and notes of oak from the time spent in cask. On the palate smooth and elegant with a sweet sensation from the Pedro Ximenez.
