Rhum Barbancourt Réserve du Domaine 15 Year Old is a Haitian Rhum Agricole. This rum released each year but only in very limited quantities. It was originally reserved for the Barbancourt family but has been made available to the general public since 1960.
Rhum Barbancourt was founded in 1862 by brothers Dupré and Labbé Barbancourt, natives of Charente in France. It was the two brothers, armed with their knowledge of distilling from back in France, who put the finishing touches to a recipe for the rums that still bears the family name today. Using his homeland’s double distillation method usually reserved for the very finest Cognacs, Dupré Barbancourt produced a unique product of incomparably quality which would regularly be recognized and receive the highest international distinctions, even today. Remaining in the family, Barbancourt’s descendant, Jean Gardère took over the estate in the 1950s. Jean and his son Thierry gave a new dimension to the estate through expansion and modernisation. Most recently, in 2017, Jean’s granddaughter, Delphine Gardère became the current guardian of the estate’s heritage and know-how and has inspired a more modern and international dimension to the distillery and to the Barbancourt brand.
Unlike “industrial rum” made from the fermentation of molasses, a by-product of the production of cane sugar, Rhum Barbancourt is an “agricultural rum” (or “rhum agricole”), a rum made from fermented sugar cane juice. Only 100% pure sugar cane juice is used. This is harvested and crushed within 24/48 hours to guarantee their freshness. After fermentation, Rhum Barbancourt is aged in Limousin oak barrels at the Domaine’s cellars in the capital of Port-au-Prince. It is in these oak barrels that Rhum Barbancourt expresses its unique flavor and bouquet; a subtle blending of Haiti’s sun and soil.
Rhum Barbancourt Réserve du Domaine 15 Year Old is made from pure sugar cane juice, distilled and aged in French Oak barrels for 15 years.
