Available to buy now at Fareham Wine Cellar.

About Zenato Wines

Zenato was founded in 1960 by Sergio Zenato and his wife, Carla. As well as Amarone, Zenato also produces some other fantastic red wines, including Bardolino and Zenato Ripassa, and some lovely white wines like their Pinot Grigio and Lugana. The cellars are located at San Benedetto di Lugana, in the heart of the Lugana region, on Lake Garda. The winery is in the capable hands of Sergio’s children, Alberto and Nadia, who have clearly inherited their father’s talents and wine-making passion.

Vineyard Locations

Zenato’s vineyards span three distinct estates. The 95-hectare Santa Cristina estate in San Benedetto di Lugana is dedicated to the Trebbiano di Lugana grape. In Valpolicella, the Costalunga estate is the birthplace of Zenato’s renowned Amarone, cultivated with the classic Corvina, Rondinella, and Oseleta varieties. Finally, in Tuscany, a small 3.8-hectare estate produces Zenato’s unique expression of the Bolgheri DOC, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Zenato Amarone DOCG Riserva Sergio Zenato Vineyards

Zenato Amarone DOCG Riserva Sergio Zenato is only produced in the best vintages. As mentioned above, the grapes for this fabulous Amarone wine are selected from the very best vineyards in the township of Sant’Ambrogio in the heart of Valpolicella’s “Classico” zone. The hilly vineyards are located at an altitude of 300 to 350 metres above sea level and have a, southeast / southwest exposure. The vines have an average age of 20 years old and are planted on limey/ clayey soils rich in rock fragments.

Winemaking

  • Grapes are manually harvested from late September to early October.
  • After harvest, grapes are hand-sorted into 5 kg crates.
  • The grapes are then left to dry for approximately 4 months in well-ventilated drying lofts.
  • In January, the dried grapes are pressed.
  • Fermentation occurs slowly on the skins for 15 to 20 days.
  • The wine is transferred to large Slavonian oak barrels for maturation.
  • The Amarone is aged casks for at least four years.
  • After cask aging, the wine spends a minimum of one year in the bottle before release.

Zenato Amarone DOCG Riserva Sergio Zenato is a blend of 85% Corvina, 10% Rondinella and 5% composed of Oseleta and Croatina.

Tasting Notes

The Zenato Amarone DOCG Riserva Sergio Zenato is a robust yet refined wine. It has a deep, intense ruby-red colour. It has an intense bouquet of dark cherries, raisins, and ripe blackberries, with smoky notes of chocolate, anise and subtle nuances of cinnamon and cedar. The palate is full-bodied and velvety with well-integrated tannins and a rich, warm texture with great length.

Food Pairing

Although Zenato Amarone DOCG Riserva Sergio Zenato is perfect on its own, it also pairs well with hearty, flavoursome dishes.

Try it with a slow-roasted leg of lamb or stews and braises like braised short ribs. It is also a great wine partner for game meats such as venison or wild boar. For a vegetarian option, try a wild mushroom risotto or a truffle-infused pasta.

It pairs well with hard mature cheeses like a well-matured Parmigiano-Reggiano.
