Chateau Lassegue Les Cadrans de Lassegue is the property’s second wine. It is a different cuvée from the Chateau Lassegue itself and is made primarily from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It is a refined and elegant style of red wine. Bottled as a St Emilion Grand Cru.
Chateau Lassègue has produced superb wines since the 17th century. For many years it was owned by the Freylon family who created this exceptional vineyard and built up an enviable reputation. The estate was sold in 2003 to two couples: Jess Jackson and his wife Barbara Banke, Californian visionaries in the world of wine, partnered with Bordelais Pierre and Monique Seillan. Jess and Barbara founded Jackson Family Wines in 1982 which has its roots in California. Their Californian wineries include Camelot Highlands and Hartford Court and they now own wineries around the world including Yangarra in Australia and Capensis in South Africa. Pierre Seillan is a recognized, sixth-generation vigneron who for many years ran Jackson Wine Estates International vineyards. The new owners invested a lot of money into the estate improving the vineyards, infrastructure and winery. Today, Barbara, Monique and Pierre are pleased to watch the estate evolve and develop under the next generation with Nicolas Seillan as vigneron, alongside his wife Christina.
The Château’s 36 hectares of vineyards are situated on the prestigious slope (Côte) of Saint Emilion, which makes up just 3% of the appellation. The vineyards are laid out across a natural amphitheatre and are blessed with a perfect south/south-west exposure and a clay soil mixed with varying proportions of limestone.
Pierre and Nicolas think in terms of “micro-crus”, taking the time to understand the terroir and to adapt their methods to different vintages. This means that individual vineyard plots are looked after and tended separately. Sustainable management of the vineyards and gentle treatment of the grapes during the harvest ensures that the character of each individual micro-cru shines through. Each micro-cru is vinified separately in a range of small tanks which allows the winemaker a great deal of control in producing the final blend.
Seillan does not necessarily consider Chateau Lassegue Les Cadrans de Lassegue a second wine but rather another he can use to showcase the diversity of the estate. The grape come from 40 to 50 year old vines grown on clay and limestone soils.
Les Cadrans de Lassegue 2014 is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc aged for 10 months in French oak, 20% of which is new.
From Lassegue:
Very beautiful deep and brilliant red color with spices on the nose. A lot of finesse on the palate with nutmeg and white pepper flavors. A very balanced wine that develops a good length on the palate and a mineral finish. Fine and persistent tannins.
