Château Pavie-Macquin St Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classe is located in the Right Bank of the Bordeaux wine growing region in the appellation of Saint-Émilion. In 2006, the estate was promoted from Grand Cru Classé to Premiers Grands Crus Classé B in the Saint-Émilion wine classification.
The modern history of Château Pavie-Macquin began when the estate was acquired by the owner of the neighbouring Château La Serre, Albert Macquin, in 1887. Macquin was a pioneer in combating phylloxera, and the vines at Pavie-Macquin were some of the very first to be grafted onto American rootstocks. Today, the estate is owned by the Corre and Charpentier families, Macquin’s grandchildren.
The Pavie Macquin vineyard is located on a plateau, next to the Mondot hill and on the edge of the Fongaban fault, at 100 metres above sea level. The estate is bordered by illustrious neighbours Chateau Troplong-Mondot to the east and Chateau Pavie to the south.
The soils are all limestone-clay and express different aspects of the terroir through the vine, depending on the strength of the clay, and above all on their proximity to the limestone layer at a depth of between 20cm and 150cm. The terroir of limestone and clay contributes to the red wine’s power, minerality, freshness and generosity.
The 15 hectares of vineyards at Chateau Pavie Macquin are planted with:
Château Pavie-Macquin 2021 offers a vibrant, medium-bodied profile with aromas of cherries, blackberries, and raspberries, accented by mint, spices, and bay leaf. The palate is elegant yet structured, with chalky tannins, bright acidity, and a mineral-driven finish
Try this fine Bordeaux wine with grilled or roasted lamb chops, beef tenderloin, duck breast, venison, or wild boar with a berry reduction
It would also work well with a mushroom risotto, roasted portobello mushrooms with truffle oil, or mature, hard cheeses like Comté or Gouda.
