Why Buy a Bordeaux Half Bottle?

Half bottles of Bordeaux red wine are one of the most underrated formats in any wine collection. At 37.5cl, a half bottle provides approximately two to three glasses of wine – enough for a single generous serving with dinner, or to pair one course perfectly without committing to a full 75cl. Half bottles of Bordeaux also age slightly faster than full bottles due to the higher ratio of oxygen to wine, meaning they tend to reach their drinking window a year or two earlier – useful if you’re not planning to cellar for the long term.

Bordeaux half bottles make an excellent choice for entertaining guests with different tastes, building a varied cellar without overspending, or simply trying a wine before investing in full bottles of the same vintage.

About Château Rocher-Calon & Montagne Saint-Émilion

Château Rocher-Calon is owned by Vignobles Lagardère, a family estate founded after World War I when Pierre Lagardère purchased his first hectare in Pomerol. Today, the father-and-son team Jean-Claude and Gaël Lagardère farms 17 hectares in Montagne Saint-Émilion alongside holdings in Pomerol, with modern, temperature-controlled cellars and micro-oxygenation delivering consistent quality across every vintage.

Montagne Saint-Émilion AOC, created in 1936, sits just five kilometres north of Saint-Émilion on Bordeaux’s Right Bank – the largest of the Saint-Émilion satellite appellations, alongside Lussac-Saint-Émilion. The satellite appellations offer much of the character of their more prestigious neighbour at considerably more accessible prices – and in half-bottle format, they represent some of the best-value fine Bordeaux available.

Also available in 75cl bottles.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby in colour, with enticing aromas of ripe blackberries and cherries complemented by hints of cedar and tobacco. On the palate it is full-bodied with velvety tannins, showing dark fruit, chocolate, and subtle spice. The finish is long and elegant, with refreshing acidity that balances the richness perfectly – a classic expression of Montagne Saint-Émilion in miniature.

FAQs

Château Rocher-Calon Half Bottle — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a wine half bottle?
A half bottle contains 37.5cl of wine — exactly half the volume of a standard 75cl bottle, providing approximately two to three glasses. The format is widely used in fine wine, with Bordeaux châteaux regularly producing half bottle runs alongside their standard releases.

Do Bordeaux half bottles age as well as full bottles?
Half bottles age slightly faster than full bottles because the ratio of oxygen to wine is higher. They typically reach their drinking window one to two years earlier than the equivalent full bottle, making them a practical choice for those who don’t plan to cellar long term.

Is Château Rocher-Calon half bottle ready to drink now?
Yes — the 2022 vintage is already showing generous, approachable fruit. In half bottle format it will drink beautifully now through to 2030–2032.

What food pairs well with this Bordeaux half bottle?
Classic pairings include roast lamb, beef, duck breast, mushroom dishes, and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C and decant for 20–30 minutes before serving.

Do you stock other Bordeaux half bottles?
