Goulée by Chateau Cos d’Estournel a red Bordeaux wine that was first released in 2003. Originally simply called Goulee it has been renamed Goulée by Chateau Cos d’Estournel and, from the 2019 vintage it will be called G d’Estournel.
Chateau Cos d’Estournel itself, sits in the midst of 70 hectares of vineyard. These are located between Pauillac and St Estephe and only separated from the vineyards of Lafite by the stream known as La Jalle du Breuil (The Breuil Brook). The Hill of Cos (‘Cos’ means ‘The Hill of Pebbles’ in the old Gascon language) dominates the Gironde from the height of almost 65 feet. The estate was founded by Louis Gaspard d’Estournel in 1811 and has passed through many owners. Shortly after Louis Gaspard died in 1852 the new owner began to sell the wines on La Place and the Chateau classified as one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. The estate has been owned since 2000 by entrepreneur Michel Reybier. Since 2000, Cos d’Estournel has undergone a massive investment scheme whilst keeping respect for the land and the men and women of the estate.
The Goulée vineyard is located away Chateau Cos d’Estournel from in the north of the Médoc in Port de Goulée and Jau-Dignac and Loirac. It covers a gravelly hill, facing the Gironde estuary. Goulée, which used to be an island surrounded by the waters of the estuary, has a deep gravel terroir worthy of the best Grands Crus and is treated as such by the team at Cos d’Estournel. The Goulée vineyard enjoys an extraordinarily temperate climate in which the two main grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (80%) and Merlot (20%) are able grow in superb conditions. The wine is aged in 50% new French oak barrels for around 14 months.
The wine is made at Chateau Marbuzet in St-Estephe, which is also owned by the owner of Chateau Cos d’Estournel, Michel Reybier.
Goulee 2018 is a blend of 73% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc.
Goulée by Cos d’Estournel 2018 strikes an elegant balance between opulence and freshness. It is a vivacious dense wine whose aromas of ripe red and black berries are complemented by spicy and mineral notes.
