Description

Chateau de Soutard Les Jardins de Soutard is a French red wine from the Saint-Emilion wine-growing region of Bordeaux. The 2004 is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc and is made in a very elegant style with a pleasant and long finish. This is a very well-balanced and traditional style St Emilion.

What Is Les Jardins de Soutard?

Les Jardins de Southard is the old name for the second wine of Chateau Soutard, which today is known as Petit Soutard.

In 2004, whilst there was a lot of wrangling about the St Emilion classification, Chateau Soutard did not register the main wine as a Grand Cru (they did not release a second wine either). Instead, they have released just one wine – Les Jardins de Soutards which was, in effect, a St Emilion Grand Cru Classé by any other name, rather than a second wine.

Chateau Soutard, Since 1762

Chateau Soutard is a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé located in the northern extreme of Saint-Emilion’s limestone plateau. The chateau itself is a striking 18th-century classical mansion, set amid 30 hectares of vineyards, and it has become a popular destination for wine tourism. There is a also second wine called Petit Soutard.

The 30 hectare estate, which dates back to 1762, has been owned and run by the des Ligneris family since 1836. However, it has recently been sold to the owners of the neighbouring Chateau Larmande. Surprisingly, Robert Parker says that Chateau Soutard is “One of Saint-Emilion’s best-kept secrets and among the most traditionally made – rivalled only by Ausone in potential longevity”. This is surprising because Francois des Ligneris has been one of Parker’s fiercest critics.

Vineyard Plantings

Château Soutard’s 30-hectare vineyard sits on a prime terroir of clay-limestone and sandy soils, ideal for the Right Bank’s signature Merlot-dominant blends. The grape breakdown is approximately 63% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Petit Verdot.
