Description

Sassomoro Lambrusco di Modena Spumante DOC is a dry, sparkling red wine from Modena, the home of Ferrari and Maserati in the Italian region of Emilia Romagna. This is made from 100% Lambrusco grapes, but you can forget about the dodgy Lambruscos of the 1990s; this is the real deal, a proper fruity and dry Lambrusco nero. A refreshing sparkling red wine.

Azienda Agricola Castelvetro / Cantina Cleto Chiarli

Sassomoro Lambrusco di Modena Spumante DOC is produced by Azienda Agricola Castelvetro, which is another name used by Cantina Cleto Chiarli at their Tenuta Cialdini estate. Cleto Chiarli started his winemaking business in 1860 and has become known as one of the top producers of Lambrusco wines.

Located in the Heart of Lambrusco di Grasparossa

Cleto Chiarli own over 100 hectares of vineyards in the region, spread over three wine estates: the aforementioned Tenuta Cialdini, Tenuta Sozzigalli and Tenuta Belvedere.  The property is located in the heart of the Lambrusco di Grasparossa wine-growing region near the hills surrounding the village of Castelvetro in the Modena Province. The estate has 42 hectares out of a total of 71 hectares planted with vineyards.

Sassomoro Lambrusco di Modena Spumante DOC Winemaking

The grapes for Sassomoro Lambrusco di Modena Spumante DOC are very gently pneumatically pressed and left to cold macerate for 48 hours at 10 – 12 degrees C. The juice is then racked off the skins and clarified before a slow fermentation at 18 degrees C in “cuves closes”. This sealed environment forces some of the carbon dioxide (a natural byproduct of the alcoholic fermentation) to become trapped in the wine, creating the lightly sparkling character.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Intense purple or deep ruby with striking, shocking pink foam, lively, persistent bubbles, and a frothy mousse.
  • Aroma: Explosive and fruit-forward—morello cherries, blackberries, elderberries, wild berries, forest strawberries; floral hints of violet or raspberry-violet, plus fresh vinous notes.
  • Palate: Dry and juicy with tart dark/red fruits (blackberry, plum, morello cherry, red currant, bitter blueberry); silky tannins, refreshing acidity, creamy bubble texture, and a crisp, balanced finish with subtle bitterness and grip.
  • Overall: Vibrant, elegant, and delightfully dry—juicy yet focused, serious yet fun, with excellent persistence. A modern, quality Lambrusco far from the sweet stereotype.

Food Pairing

Serve well-chilled (8-10°C) to highlight the sparkling red wine’s fizz and freshness.

Perfect as an aperitif, with Emilia-Romagna classics like prosciutto, Parmigiano, tortellini in ragù, grilled meats, pizza or charcuterie boards.
