Baron de L Pouilly Fumé is de Ladoucette’s Grande Cuvee and is considered by many to be, quite simply, the best Pouilly Fumé that the Loire has to offer; indeed, Baron de L Pouilly Fumé is recognised as one of the greatest Sauvignon Blancs in the world. It is only made in the best vintages.
The vineyards of Domaine de Ladoucette are the largest and most famous vineyards of Pouilly Fume. The estate has been owned by the Comte Lafond and de Ladoucette families since 1787, when Comte Lafond purchased the estate from the illegitimate daughter of the French king, Louis XV. Today, Baron Patrick de Ladoucette, a descendant of the Comte Lafond, owns the estate.
De Ladoucette also owns many other prestigious wineries, including Sancerre Comte Lafond, Regnard Chablis and, one of our favourites, Marc Bredif in Vouvray.
Baron de L Pouilly Fume is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes sourced from de Ladoucette’s Le Desert, La Fontaine, La Belle Vue, La Crois and Les Bleus vineyards. These vineyards, averaging 40 years old, are considered among the finest in the region. They are planted on classic Pouilly-Fumé soils rich in limestone and flint, which impart the distinctive smoky minerality the region is famous for.
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes are harvested by hand, so they are in optimum condition and freshness when they reach the three-level, gravity-fed winery at Chateau du Nozet which is no more than 6 minutes from any of the above vineyards.
Unlike many other Sauvignon Blancs, Baron de L is unusual: this premium Pouilly Fumé has the cellaring potential to gracefully age for 5 to 10 years and longer.
A world-class white wine, and served at Elton John’s wedding no less!
On the nose Baron de L Pouilly Fume is a harmonious blend of strength and freshness with orange peel, grapefruit, beeswax and floral hints. On the palate, the fruit is full and elegant showing a mineral complexity combined with herbaceous fruit and zesty acidity. The length is extraordinary and makes Baron de L one of the finest expressions of Sauvignon Blanc.
