Koster-Wolf Flonheimer Rothenpfad Riesling Kabinett Halbtrocken is an off-dry Riesling from the Rheinessen, the largest of the 13 German wine-growing regions. Two generations have been working together on the estate of Koster-Wolf, located in the village of Albig, for almost twenty years.
Today it is run by Bärbel Schlösser and her husband, winegrower’s son Claus Wolf. Claus took over from his parents, Heidrun and Manfred who took over from their parents in the 1970s. Claus is the 11th generation of his family to run the estate. Barbara and Claus had met at the Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences where they were both studying viticulture and oenology. Today their sons, Maximilian and Ferdinand, also work in the family business and the estate comprises some 33 hectares. As a family, they pride themselves on the quality and integrity of their estate wines. The emphasis in vineyard management is placed on keeping the delicate balance between land, climate, plants and animals.
The Riesling grapes for this wine come from the 2.5 hectare vineyard of Flonheimer Rothenpfad where some of the slopes have an incline of 60%. The grapes were harvested at optimum maturity and selected to vinify the healthy and ripe fruit. Cool fermentation with selected yeasts took place at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks to capture the freshness of the Riesling grapes. The wine was matured reductively in stainless steel tanks until bottling.
Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
Halbtrocken is a German word that translates literally to “half-dry” in English. It is the name given to a style of wine that falls between dry and off-dry on the sweetness scale. Halbtrocken wines typically have a residual sugar level ranging from 9 to 18 g/L. This level of sweetness provides a balanced, nuanced flavour profile – not overly dry, but also not overly sweet – and makes the wines very versatile for food pairing.
