Torres Vina Esmeralda is a white wine from the Denominacion d’Origen of Cataluyna in Spain, it is one of their most famous wines and is named “Esmeralda” after the emerald green colour of the Mediterranean.
The Torres family has been making wine in the ancient Catalán town of Vilafranca del Penedès, south-west of Barcelona, since the 17th Century. It is this tradition combined with innovation, dynamism and commitment to quality that has put Torres firmly on the world map. Today the Torres Family have vineyards all over Spain with estates in Rioja and Priorat amongst other regions. There are also branches of the family in Chile with Miguel Torres Chile and in California at Marimar Estate and the family are founding members of the Primum Familiae Vini.
DO Cataluyna (Catalonia in Catalan) was officially recognised in 1999 and was created to encompass many wineries in the region that did not fit into any other DOs. DO Cataluyna covers the Penedes wine-growing region where Torres are based in Pacs. The white grapes from this wine come from the mountainous area of the Upper Penedes where the slightly cooler climate is suitable to the more delicate and aromatic white grape varieties.
Torres Vina Esmeralda is a blend of 85% Moscatel de Alejandría (Muscat of Alexandria) and 15% Gewurztraminer. Moscatel, or Muscat, is one of the few grape varieties that produce wines that taste of grapes and the Gerwuztraminer, which probably most famously grown in Alsace in France, brings aromatic, lychee, rose and spicy hints to the wine. Vinification is in stainless steel and the wine normally has around 8g/L residual sugar making it a medium dry style.
Vina Esmeralda is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Brilliant straw yellow. Very fragrant, with delicate floral (rose) and fruit (lychee) notes. Soft and seductive on the palate with a luscious (acacia honey) finish.
Excellent with seafood appetizers, fish and pâté. Well worth trying with Asian food. Serve at 11ºC.
