Description

Zensa Fiano Puglia IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta) is an organic white wine made in the Puglia wine-growing region. Fiano is a grape variety which is commonly found in Campania, Southern Italy and Sicily although recently it can now be found outside of Italy in countries such as Australia and Argentina.

Zensa Fiano by Orion Wines

Zensa Fiano is made by Orion Wines, a company created to bring together interesting wines from small growers and wineries from all over Italy. The company was created by Luca Pomaro and winemaker Alessandro Michelon and Orion Wines retains complete control over the vineyards and growers they work with.

The idea is to produce wines from indigenous grapes that express the typicity of the particular region where they are grown. Zensa means “without” or “to do without” in Italian, and the organic Zensa Fiano is made without pesticides and fertilisers.

Zensa Fiano Vineyards

Fiano is a grape variety which is commonly found in Campania, Southern Italy and Sicily, although recently it can now be found outside of Italy in countries such as Australia and Argentina. The grapes for the Zensa Fiano are sourced from low-yielding, fully organic vineyards in the Salento region of southern Puglia. The vines are trained in the spurred cordon system and are an average of 10 to 15 years old, with a plant density of approximately 5000 plants per hectare.

Winemaking

  • Early Morning Harvest: The grapes are picked during cooler morning hours to ensure they arrive at the winery in peak condition and retain their freshness.

  • Gentle Processing: Once harvested, the fruit is destemmed and gently pressed. The resulting must is then chilled and left to rest for 18 hours.

  • Temperature-Controlled Fermentation: The juice is racked into stainless steel tanks, where it undergoes a cool, steady fermentation at 18°C.

  • Lees Contact: Finally, the wine is left to sit on its lees for approximately one week, a process that helps develop additional complexity and a desirable, creamy texture.

Tasting Notes

Zensa Fiano is straw yellow in colour with an elegant floral aroma of mango peaches and sage. On the palate is crisp and refreshing with tropical notes and exotic fruit. The finish is incredibly well balanced long and persistent.

Food Pairings

Try Zensa Fiano with:

  • Fresh Seafood: a perfect match for grilled sea bass, sautéed prawns or a classic fritto misto.

  • Light Pasta & Herbs: try it with spaghetti alle vongole or a simple pasta tossed in lemon, garlic and fresh parsley.

  • Vegetarian Dishes: the tropical notes pair surprisingly well with roasted Mediterranean vegetables or a pea and mint risotto.
