Masi Bonacosta Valpolicella DOC is a Venetian red wine made by the Boscaini family, owners of Masi Agricola. It is a blend of local grape varieties.
Although owned by the Boscainis for six generations, it is really in the last fifty years that Masi has established itself as one of the Veneto’s most innovative wine producers. In the late 1950s, they identified certain historic vineyard plots which are vinified as Amarone and bottled separately to this day. In 1964, they launched the now-legendary Campofiorin, which revived the technique of a second fermentation with semi-dried grapes. Masi have also rescued the ancient Oseleta variety from extinction, and continue to use it in two of their celebrated “Supervenetian” wines. Not content with making wine in just Italy they also have their Masi Tupungato project in Argentina.
The Valpolicella Classica region is the heart of the old wine-growing region and it is a valley that is divided into the Negrar, Marano and Fumane sub-valleys. The wine-growing area extends north of Verona, at the foot of the Veronese Prealps, and borders Lake Garda (Bardolino) to the west, while it is protected by the Lessini Mountains to the east and north.
Masi’s hillside vineyards are on west and south-west facing slopes in Valpolicella Classico. The vines face Lake Garda and benefit from the reflection of heat and light, and its tempering effect on the climate. The soil is red limestone and marl. Masi Bonacasta Valpolicella is a blend of 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella and 5% Molinara. The grapes are sourced from the foot of the hillside vineyards in the Classico zone which are richer in top-soil and benefit from soft valley breezes with an excellent exposition.
Masi do not use any animal by-products or allergy causing products in wine production so Masi Bonacosta Valpolicella Classico is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
