Tedeschi Capitel Nicalo Valpolicella DOC Superiore is made using semi-dried grapes, a method typical of the Veronese region.
The Tedeschi Family wine business can trace their roots back to 1824 when Nicolo Tedeschi purchased several vineyards (although the family have records of owning vineyards back to 1630). A descendant, Riccardo Tedeschi, purchased vineyards in 1918 which included Monte Fontana and their famous Amarone vineyard, Monte Olmi. Today Tedeschi remains a family business and, through a combination of tradition and innovation, is one of the foremost wineries, and one of the top producers of Amarone and Recioto wines, in the Veneto region. The family manages 74 hectares of vineyards, of which 29 are family owned. Amarone della Valpolicella is considered to be the most prestigious wine of the Veneto region. Most recently the family have further invested in the new vineyard sites of La Fabriseria in Pontare and Maternigo in the Eastern part of Valpolicella.
The grapes for the Tedeschi Capitel Nicalo Valpolicella DOC Superiore are grown on the Moraine hills in the heart of Valpolicella and the wine is composed of 35% Corvina, 35% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella, 10% composed of Rossignola, Oseleta, Negrara and Dindarella. The grapes are harvested into small wooden crated which are then left to dry for about one month a temperature and humidity controlled warehouse where they lose around 8 to 10% of their weight due to water evaporation. This has the effect of concentrating the sugars and flavours of the grapes. After fermentation and maceration, the wines is aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 12 to 18 months with a further 6 months in bottle prior to release.
Valpolicella DOC Superiore signifies that the wine is of a higher quality level compared to the regular Valpolicella DOC wines. To earn the Superiore designation, the wine must meet specific requirements during production including longer periods of maturation and a higher alcohol content.
Tedeschi Capitel Nicalo Valpolicella DOC Superiore is a strong ruby red colour. The nose is intense and elegant with fruit aroma (currants, black cherries), vanilla and tobacco nuances characteristic of Slavonian oak. Good body, well-structured, lively acidity and alcohol content well balanced with tannins. The after taste confirms the notes in the bouquet. A complex and elegant wine.
